And then there was one: Boston Red Sox, Job edition

August 30th, 2006 → 4:41 pm @ // No Comments

As in: one position player playing where he played on Opening Day. That’s right, folks: Coco injured himself last night on that diving catch. So maybe we don’t want him to make quite so many great plays in the outfield after all. Let’s hope no one else joins the ranks of the walking wounded today; there’s only one guy — and that’s not a misprint — on the bench: defensive specialist, er, immobile catcher Javy Lopez. (There are only 20 guys total in uniform today (21 if you include Coco), with Wells sent back East to “prepare” for his “start” and Papi, Manny, and WMP making appearances at Boston-area hospitals.) If anyone else goes down, we might see a Foulke to Beckett to Timlin DP combo by the end of the afternoon.

(But hey, Schilling did make it to 3000 K’s, although he whiffed Nick Swisher and not Milton Bradley as I’d predicted. I’m glad he got that, because it sure doesn’t look like he’ll get the win: the Sox are trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the third, and with three players in the lineup hitting below the Mendoza line, I can’t imagine these guys are up to making up any big defecits. Or any defecits, for that matter.)

Hopefully, Mike Timlin won’t make any comments about how the offense isn’t producing enough this time…

I may be in the minority, but I am grateful that the Sox are collapsing so utterly. It is easier to accept their downfall now, amidst all these injuries, than it would’ve been in late September or in the playoffs. It’s also easier to take because it is technically (though not meteorologically) still summer in Boston, meaning we don’t have to deal with the twin sledgehammers of SOX SEASON OVER and BITTER WINTER APPROACHING all at once. And maybe we’ll actually land a decent prospect in return for Wells, who was always a Yankee anyhow.

Theo is looking more and more like a genius again in my book. I don’t care if you have Oswalt or Andruw Jones, with all this bad luck… this year just wasn’t meant to be. Thanks to that F-ing crow.

SO thankfully Theo didn’t leverage the future by trading the youngens (lester, hansen, delcarmen) for a guy who most likely wouldn’t have signed in Boston anyway (oswalt). Thank god for the foresight. OK, so he made some bad choices with Coco, Tavarez/Seanez and hastily getting rid of Bard etc. But all signs pointed to YES with Coco and Tavarez/Seanez seemed like good mid-relief guys at the outset.

This just isn’t the year, it sucks, it’s hard to take but Theo can’t be blamed for everything that has happened, so looking forward, I’m glad the youngens are here. I just wish Hanley Ramirez and Anibel Sanchez were too…thanks Larry!

Seth…if Manny is moved, who else is out there to protect Papi? I’m thinking Coco could play left, if we get a legit CF or LF with power?

you were probably truly on the fence all along, but if most people are going to change their tune to this i will be pretty pissed at some of them.

Was never on the fence. Just trying to suggest that maybe THOSE who have blasted Theo over the past couple of weeks (pretty much everyone, from fan to TV to print), have some serious reconsidering to do. Pretty much everyone out there is using the Oswalt no-trade as proof that he messed up. Now more than ever, that is something THEY need to look at again.

If those who are on the fence do come around, go ahead and get pissed. I am pissed at them for not getting it in the first place.
