A move to the PLoS blog network

May 4th, 2011 → 7:49 pm @ // No Comments

Two days after The Panic Virus was released, I traveled to North Carolina’s Research Triangle for ScienceOnline 2011, aka #SciO11. The annual conference, which has been transformed into one of the premier science journalism events in the world, is the brainchild of Bora Zivkovic and Anton Zuiker — and it’s no exaggeration to say that it changed my life. (Thanks again, Rebecca Skloot and Ivan Oransky, for lighting a fire under my ass and making sure I attended.)

One example of that is the fact that starting immediately, this blog is being relocated to the PLoS Blog Network, which has been built up by the indefatigable Brian Mossop, another #SciO11’er. At  PLoS, I’ll be joining #SciO11 superstars Misha Angrist (Genomeboy), David Kroll (Take As Directed),  Hillary Rosner (Tooth and Claw) and the inimitable Steve Silberman (NeuroTribes), as well as Deborah Blum (Speakeasy Science), who would have been there save for a personal conflict that arose.

Some of the particulars of the transfer are still being ironed out, but here are the basics:

  • Everything currently available through sethmnookin.com will continue to be available here.
  • Archives dating through December 2010 will also be available on my PLoS blog. Archives from 2006 through 2009, which mainly cover baseball and are related to Feeding the Monster, will only be available here.
  • At some point after a post goes up on PLoS, it will be cross-posted here.
  • Some other details that have yet to be worked out:

  • Commenting. Comments will of course continue to be accepted; it’s unclear whether we’ll figure out a way to make sure all comments posted on PLoS will also be cross-posted here (or vice versa).
  • Notification. It’s possible there’ll be a placeholder/announcement posted here when new content goes up on PLoS.
  • Scope. It’s also unclear whether there will be some topics that would be more appropriate for me to post here and exclude from PLoS — i.e., non-sciencey topics like sports, music, etc.
  • That’s it — so head on over, check out some of the other offerings, and enjoy!

“Biomedical engineer” Brian Mossop built the PLoS blog. He researches “DNA” vaccines using gold as an adjuvant: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/14683592?dopt=Abstract

To my knowledge, he declares no conflicts of interest.
