Timlin’s right: it is the offense.

August 19th, 2006 → 10:08 am @ // No Comments

“We’ve been throwing the ball really well,” Timlin said. “I’m not calling anybody out, but we haven’t scored a whole lot. We’re pitching well, we’re holding teams down, and they’re doing the same to us.” — Mike Timlin, August 15, 2006

He has a point: last night, the Sox only scored 10 runs. And Timlin? In 2/3’s of an inning, he allowed three inherited runners to score, coughed up four more of his own, and turned a 10-7 lead into a 14-10 deficit. Timlin got the loss, but really, it probably should have gone to Hiske or Pena. They were, after all, the only two Red Sox batters that didn’t have a hit.

That’s 15 earned runs given up in Timlin’s last 19.2 innings pitched.

There’s always Canseco. I heard his knuckleball’s coming along quite well.

This is nothing new. Timlin’s record of letting inherited runners score is well established. I just don’t understand how a team that puts such an emphasis on situational stats keeps putting him in this position. This year his ERA is finally reflective of his effectiveness. Last year he was heralded as the lone rock in the pen because he had a lot of appearances and a low ERA. But his record for letting inherited runners score was always awful.

Hansen is even more disappointing. I’m all for giving the young guys the benefit of the doubt while they learn but he is getting worse not better. I think he is overmatched mentally and this may not be the right environment for him.

Overshadowed by the 7th inning meltdown was the Lester meltdown in the 2nd. Lester was sailing along nicely challenging hitters until the Cano line drive double. He then morphed into the left-handed Matt Clement – nibbling on the corners and afraid to challenge hitters with his stuff. I see the same from Hansen on many occassions. Someone hits one of his pitches hard and he goes into nibble mode. None of the above pitchers seem to hve the stuff to live on the corners ala Maddux or Glavine. Is this a learning on the job rookie issue or a Nipper/Wallace issue?

I’m sticking to my theory: you can no longer pitch Timlin after Matlock or Murder, She Wrote. He gets grumpy.
