Josh Beckett’s line on the night: 6+ innings, 70 pitches, 4 hits, 1 run, 2BB, 3 Ks…

August 25th, 2006 → 1:06 am @ // No Comments

…and one bloody finger. The good news? Apparently this isn’t the result of Beckett’s (in)famous blister issues.

(Also? I really hate the Angels broadcasters. And because I don’t want to be a hypocrite, I’ll leave it at that.)

(And: If you only watch one highlight from last night’s game, it shouldn’t be Big Papi’s homer or Lil’ Papi striking out the last two batters of the game. It most definitely should be Mirabelli’s deke to nail Juan Rivera at the plate in the bottom of the 7th. When I wake up, I’ll still have this same shit-eating grin on my face.)

(Finally: there’s something so satisfying about a visiting stadium erupting in rabid cheers when the Sox pull out a nailbiter. Shoot, they should just bring “Dirty Water” on the road.)

ditto on the Angels’ broadcasters. and I though the EEI guys were too boosterish…

hey, you should call out WMP not just Mirabelli on the throw out at home. Wily Mo threw a bullet right into Doug’s glove–he didn’t take a single step in any direction. in fact, I think he was expecting it to go to the cutoff guy.

we can thank WMP for preserving this lead tonight as well as for his 2-run HR last night, without which we might have lost by a run.

even the Angels announcers saw fit to mention WMP as player of the game. you can too, esp. after your great the-case-for-WMP post 🙂

hmm, last comment didn’t go through. anyway…

you should really call out WMP for his great throw to Mirabelli on that play. it was a bullet into Doug’s glove; he didn’t take a single step in any direction to catch it–in fact, I think he was expecting it to go to the cutoff guy.

that’s two games WMP has helped us with — preventing the tie tonight, and the go-ahead 2-run HR last night.

Sorry you had to watch it without Remy and DO, although I’m sure no announcers are as bad as the White Sox homers.

‘Belli’s deke was awesome, and I was impressed how quickly he spun around to nail Rivera. It was very encouraging to see Mike “bus driver” Timlin look strong in two outings, and Papelbo return to his prior form.

I only hope Beckett’s “cut” is truly minor. Oddly enough, the only thing that could scare RSN more than Manny’s injury and Beckett’s potential blister after pitching so well was the Papi hospitalization news (http://redsox.bostonherald.com/redSox/view.bg?articleid=154355): ARGHHHH! Hopefully it was nothing. It’d better be nothing…

I will donate $10,000 to the charity of his choice if Hudler can make it through the rest of the season without saying some variation on “Their pitchers been getting that call”.

Beckett’s last great outing (7/19 vs. Kansas City) also had Mirabelli behind the plate. Granted, it was the Royals, so it probably wasn’t easy to judge how much the catcher had an effect and how much it was having an anemic opponent.

I hope Francona takes notice now and sticks with Dougie for Beckett’s starts. Varitek usually gets the most credit for his handling of pitchers, and it was only though his injury that Dougie is getting the chance to catch someone other than Wakefield. Something might be working here. With Varitek, Beckett has been medicore; with Lopez and Huckaby (expect for 8/9, w/ Lopez vs. KC again) he has been awful.

I wasn’t bothered by the Angels broadcaster’s, and actually thought they were fairly objective regarding the Sox. There was some great baseball in last nights game and instead of dwelling on the Angels losing the series, they focused more on the playoff atmosphere and quality of play.

That said, I’m not a big fan of the 3 man booth. Everyone fights to get their words in and it turns into a male version of The View.

In case anyone is wondering why the Sox forked over $30 mil./3 years of John Henry’s money to Josh Beckett, reason A was on display last night. Maybe it was more a result of a mediocre, aggressively swinging Angels lineup than JB’s performance, but Beckett was absolutely filthy last night (not coincidentally, Javy was not catching him). Unlike the debacle on Saturday, Beckett was not nibbling on the corners last night and dancing around the stike zone. He was consistently pounding the strike zone, hitting his spots on the corners, and keeping guys honest with the curve. I’m not sure he would have gone the distance last night, but 62 pitches and 0 BB thru 6 had to be one of the most efficient pitching performances for any Sox pitcher this season, let alone Beckett. Hopefully his finger’s okay, he looks at the film, and is able to bottle this performance for the rest of the season. This is the Josh Beckett I expect to see for all of ’07 and many of us expected to see this season.
I just recently moved back to New England and arguably the biggest bonus to moving back had to be no longer dealing with opposing team’s announcers on the Extra Innings package. It’s amazing how much more enjoyable it is to watch a game called by Remy and Orsillo. Maybe I’ll even buy their bobblehead as an homage.

Hey they’re only 5.5 back now. We’re not out of it yet.

It’s kind of sad when sarcarism is the only thing that gets you through the day when talking about the Sox.

I think the Angels broadcasters need to learn from their crosstown colleague Vin Scully and realize that not talking incessantly during a baseball game is OK to do.

Great performance by Beckett. I wish this Josh Beckett would have shown up during the beginning of the month instead of waiting until now though.

I completely agree about the Angels broadcasters. Horrible. I couldn’t imagine being a Angels fan forced to listen to their inane chatter all season. Made me want to hit the SAP button. Only those idiots from the White Sox are worse (and Michael Kay of course).

Why is Timlin being used as the 7th/8th inning guy in a 1/2 run game? Is there no one else? Because he is clearly not getting it done right now. What about Foulke or Delcarmen?

Haven’t seen enough yet, but it is looking like WMP can maybe play the field. I’d like to see a lot more throws before I figure out if he has a rocket or not, but it just might be. Now a little bit more of plate disipline and the trade is looking better every day.

If one subscribes to MLB extra innings, and NESN on DISH why can’t we get Jerry and Don’s broadcast? Much prefered to the other anouncers we get to hear on MLB extra innings.

Are you kidding me? Bob Davis from RSTN in Kansas City can put the Rolling Stones to sleep faster than listening to the Genesis Greatest Hits album.
