You thought last year’s Mets series was crazy? Wait until Wednesday.

When my baseball game-watching career is over, I have no doubt that being present when Pedro returned to Boston in a Mets uniform will be one of the highlights (along with that ’99 one hitter at Yankee Stadium. Oh, and the final 8 games of the 2004 season). But as crazy as Fenway was those nights last June — and as crazy as Opening Day in ’05 was — I have a feeling Dice-K’s first start in Red Sox home whites is going to be full-scale, batshit insane.
Again, let’s remember: today’s game was only against the Royals. And, as we all know from Monday, it’s only one game. But, yeah, 7 IPs, 10Ks, 1BB, and a knee-buckling curve that starts off batters with a called strike…I can live with that. (It’s almost, dare I say it…Pedro-esque.) Shoot, even Mr. Covelli L. Crisp got into the action. Nice RBI, Coco!

Today’s game was sweet even over the miserable medium of MLB GameDay. Daisuke shines like he should, and to make it that much sweeter, he outduels another young gun who looks to be a ready after spending last year on the shelf getting treated for depression and anxiety. We get five hits and two runs out of the new trio in the lineup (Lugo, Drew, and Pedroia). Coco Crisp, he of the Nomar-esque aura after a bad-luck first season in Boston, gets a clutch RBI to end his 0-for-9 start to the season. Lugo steals third and scores on a bad throw. Even Papi shows some wheels, scoring on a wild pitch. (But it is terrifying whenever he slides into home, isn’t it?) Romero does a nice job in the 8th, setting up Papelbon to close… which he does, striking out two. Pedroia has five hits so far; Lowell three doubles. What’s not to love?

Dice-K was filthy. He made a whole bunch of guys look absolutely silly. He’s going to be a lot of fun to watch.

What a start for Dice-K. As advertised, this guy seems very comfortable in the spotlight.

Also in spotlight news, the second best story of the day is the Yankees sloppy loss to Tampa. And the best part of that is A-Rod popping up with the bases loaded to end the eighth and getting booed. Kevin Kernan of the New York Post referred to the crowd reaction as ‘opt-out boos’. Not sure if he coined that but you have to love it. A-Rod sent a message to the fans that it would be up to them to decide if he stayed in pinstripes or not, so he’s going to be hearing ‘opt-in cheers’ or ‘opt-out boos’. After 2 games, A-Rod is hitting .300 with a homer and 3 RBI but has been booed loudly in both games. Perfect.

Jonah Lehrer at scienceblogs has a post today about Daisuke, specifically about how hard it is for a hitter to succeed when they have to guess which pitch is coming from a guy who has an arsenal of 6-8 great pitches.

It’s interesting––and great––that the Sox have a guy who can baffle hitters with the variety of his pitches AND another guy whose only pitch, a knuckler, can itself at times be just as baffling. Too bad the Sox still seem unable to give Wake any run support.
