2009 Spring Training catch-all look back post

March 5th, 2009 → 1:06 pm @

It’s been an eventful off-season: there’s the whole A-Rod ‘roid thing, the just-completed Manny negotiations, and the Yankees $800 trillion signing of Mark Texeria. In honor of all this, let’s–as Phil Lesh used to say–take a step back…and relive some moments from years gone by.

In honor of Scott Boras’s always-entertaining deal-making: an FTM excerpt about Johnny Damon’s dishonest decamping to the Yankees.

In honor of the ever-growing PED scandal: Bill James’s stance on steroids, the possibility of Jose Canseco being a great prophet, and the sheer lunacy of the MLB Players Association stance on drug testing.

And finally, in honor of the most entertaining third-basement playing today: the oft-overlooked connection between A-Rod and Jon Lester and the union’s stupidity vis-a-vis the 2003 A-Rod contract circus.

Enjoy!

They’re not the best at what they do…

Because obsessives tend to be somewhat catholic about their obsessions…here’s some great Dead-related stuff I’ve stumbled upon. The band has been reworking its website; one of the new features is The Taper’s Section where, every Monday, music from shows played during that week is posted/discussed. About 2/3 of the band’s 2,400 shows are represented. You can sign up for the RSS Feed and, best of all, everything that’s posted is downloadable. This week’s selections include a handful of ’74 cuts, the first no-CA shows in the band’s history (Vancouver, ’66), and a fairly insane Cold Rain-Sampson from Red Rocks, ’82.

For all of you non-Dead Heads out there, commence mocking me…now.

Guess who’s back…back again

I’m almost certain I’ve already used that lame, ripped-off headline after disappearing for three days or so. But I’ve found — especially when I have other things going on and when it’s so motherfucking cold outside it takes all of my energy to go out to get milk — that this whole keeping-informed-to-the-extent-that-I-feel-like-I-have-something-to-add-to-the-conversation stuff is hard. And yes, I know, I could just blather on about a subject about which I have nothing to add…but I’m not at that point. Yet.

Anyway, to keep the whole Slim Shady thing going, way back when I did the whole “cleaning out my comments” schtick (twice, actually); it’s time for a reminder. I’m all for throwing some elbows and letting the invective (or the freak flag) fly, but once a conversation has run its course (or once people start being truly offensive), I’ll cut things off. Don’t take it personally, folks…

Guess who’s back?

I know, and I’m sorry for the extended absence. It’s just that I’ve been finishing up an assignment, engaging in the futile/frustrating search for New York real-estate, and planning a wedding. (I know you all care. You can admit it.)

But events have now made it impossible to continue my wormholding for any longer. So be warned: you ain’t never heard a mind as perverted as mine.*

* Note: this is not actually true.
